“Sex education”, for most of the population these two words don’t fit along. It is unacceptable for most societies to combine sex with the part of education. Sex has been a taboo word, it is not discussed in public but is considered as a private or personal topic to be talked about.
For most of the peoples discussing sex in public could influence younger generation towards which would destroy their culture and tradition, so here we see that sex rather than just pleasure of human life is considered as a virus which shouldn’t be spread in public. Above mentioned miscommunication and misunderstanding is because of lack of sex education if and only if people would know what other than just pleasure sex is, they would have like to discuss it. If they would know that sex is not the matter of two peoples but the part of society it could be acceptable.
As per the web search, “ The first national policy on sexuality education in schools was announced in 1938, but sex education was not taught in schools until 1978. It was then called ‘Life and Family Studies’, and its content consisted of issues related to the reproductive system and personal hygiene”.
Societies of scholars have tried to include such topics in the schools but rather than being direct they have concealed it song various other topics.
The word sex education is a taboo topic in India. India is a place with several different cultures and traditions, each culture with its own rules and traditions. Peoples in India have always been conservative and most of them orthodox. Isn’t it strange where other countries are making movies and series on such topics to create awareness and here we are who avoid even basic sex education?
So what are we afraid of? Are we afraid of sex?
Clearly not.
We just have the habit of opposing things that we don’t understand properly. So whenever we got the chance to talk about sex education, we just get offended and start avoiding it. The excuse that we use the most to avoid Sex education is, “These things are not allowed in our culture, this is all western culture, our culture doesn’t allow to talk about such things.”
We are so afraid to talk about Sex education that we don’t even use the “sex” word while talking about sex. But one thing that we always forget is, We are the nation that gave “Kamasutra”, the world’s first book on sex education, to the world. So, clearly, our ancestors were more progressive than us.
It’s our habit if we want to avoid something we just give excuses like it’s not allowed in our culture, and shifts the blames neatly to our ancestors. But as I told you our ancestors and our culture are much more progressive than we think.
There are temples and monuments for instance if we take the example of Ajanta Ellora Caves to have many caves containing exotic paintings, Temples like Hampi and many other monuments which are an important part of our culture contains many paintings, and inscriptions related to sex.
For those highly religious minds who oppose discussing sex in public, Hindus even have a god specifically called “Kamadeva”, so the point why are we stopping our younger generation to learn what actually sex, sexual need are and how to actually achieve them.
Sex education not only involves pleasure but it also covers topics such as STDs, Control of Sexual Urge, Knowing the specifics of the human body and its sensation.
Sex education will not provoke any wrong urges in the generation but it will allow people to understand their urges, emotions. This particularly would be helpful in stopping the rising rape cases, if and only if one would know how to manage themselves, what a rape could actually do to a women’s body and mind, what a forcible act of sex does to a person, it can surely suppress the act of rising rape against women’s.
So it’s time we start being progressive and talk about Sex Education more openly. Sex Education is teaching various topics related to sex and sexuality. It’s not only about sex and sexual intercourse. Various topics such as emotional relation and responsibilities, sexual activities, safe sex, birth control, age of consent, reproduction rights are also part of Sex Education. So stop running and start accepting.
