Let’s go through some of the myths and keep in mind, the facts.
Dr Munjaal Kapadia, gynaecologist at Namaha Hospital said, “Firstly, periods do not have any impact on the immunity of a person. You can take the vaccine even during your periods. Periods have no effect on the vaccine. One should take the vaccine at the earliest. You are not supposed to delay your vaccine just because you are on your periods.”
Myth: A menstruating woman cannot take the vaccine as it will make them fall sick.
Fact: Several gynaecologists said that COVID vaccine is not of any risk to menstruating women. It will not harm their body. A post has been viral on social media that women cannot take the vaccine from five days prior to periods to five days past periods. This post also states a fake reason that women have very less immunity during periods. This is not an information based on data. It is a just a hoax.
Myth: The vaccine will cause infertility.
Fact: Another fear among women is that if they want to have a child in future they should refrain from getting the vaccination, as it may cause infertility. No such information is given by doctors. This rumour is also due to WhatsApp forwards and social media shares. No vaccine, including covid vaccine, has been related to infertility. Any person who wants to have a baby should definitely go get vaccinated.
Myth: After the vaccine we will not need to follow the distancing or wear masks.
Fact: This is a big no-no. Even after vaccination we need to follow the rules like ever. We are already seeing the effects of not complying with the rules properly. The vaccines are not 100% effective. We have no idea if the person walking beside us are vaccinated or not. So we have to practise distancing and cover our mouths.
Myth: Pregnant women or breastfeeding women should not get the vaccine.
Fact: In India, pregnant women were excluded from the trial. So, pregnant women should wait for a green signal from the government.
But According to International professional bodies, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, you should get the vaccine. Because if you catch the flu the situation is going to be worse for you and your child. Don’t fall for the rumours. Keep yourself safe.
International professional bodies have taken an uniform positive stand on vaccinating lactating women while Indian government is yet to give a thumbs up. Worldwide, pregnant and lactating women were included in the trial of the vaccine and the outcome was positive.
